Call for Papers
Increasingly more people become dependent on wireless and mobile communications. It is therefore necessary to ensure that they get connectivity and service support on demand. This may be provided by a new generation of wireless technologies such as mesh networks, ad hoc delay tolerant and opportunistic networks, sensor networks, and vehicular networks. The technologies will be integrated with the Internet, the cloud, and with legacy wireless technologies such as 3G and 4G cellular and WiFi.
There are many challenges to be addressed, including integration of infrastructure-based and ad hoc networks, development of robust and lightweight algorithms for self-organization, reconfiguration at all layers of the protocol stack, as well as on-demand service models and their provision in a highly dynamic environments with mobile users.
IEEE/IFIP WONS, now in its eleventh edition, has established itself as a high-quality forum to address these challenges based on innovative contributions by experts in the field who meet in the context of a conference that is rich in interactions.
This announcement solicits original submissions of high-quality research papers on “wireless on-demand networks” that provide novel insights on protocol and network design, modeling, performance evaluation, profitability models, energy efficiency, QoS models and mechanisms, practical implementations, service level aspects, application use cases and Internet integration of wireless networks.
Topics related to all kinds of wireless on-demand networks comprise, but are not limited to:

Manuscript Submission
Submitted papers must not have been published elsewhere and must not be under current review by another conference or journal. Authors are invited to submit double-column full (up to 8 pages) and short papers (up to 4 pages) as a PDF file, with a font size no smaller than 10pt. Short papers should present future research directions and ongoing work infused with visionary, innovative ideas. Accepted short papers and posters will be included in the conference proceedings. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register and present the paper at the conference.
Papers (including those for special sessions) must be submitted through the EDAS system. The following link will bring you directly to EDAS registration page for IEEE/IFIP WONS 2014. Please create an EDAS login before submitting your paper.
The IEEE/IFIP WONS 2014 Best Paper Award will recognize the authors of superior quality papers submitted to the conference. The Best Paper Award authors will be recognized at the conference.
IEEE and IEEE Communications Society Policies
Papers are reviewed on the basis that they do not contain plagiarized material and have not been submitted to any other conference at the same time (double submission). These matters are taken very seriously and the IEEE Communications society will take action against any author who has engaged in either practice.
IEEE Web Page on Double Submission
PLEASE NOTE: To be published in the IEEE/IFIP WONS 2014 Conference Proceedings and IEEE Xplore®, at least one author of an accepted paper is required to register for the conference and must present the paper at the conference. Non-refundable registration fees must be paid prior to uploading the final IEEE formatted, publication-ready version of the paper. For authors with multiple accepted papers, an additional fee is required for each additional paper. Accepted and presented papers will be published in the IEEE/IFIP WONS 2014 Conference Proceedings and in IEEE Xplore®. Also, please make sure you fill in the IEEE copyright form when submitting the camera-ready version of your paper.
Special Sessions
WONS 2014 is pleased to host two special sessions, one on Vehicular Ad hoc Networks and Intelligent Transportation Systems, as well as one on Community Wireless Networks.
VANETS AND ITS
As vehicle on-board electronics become increasingly sophisticated and no longer restricted only to luxury cars, the stage is set for vehicular communication to enhance our driving experience. The primary goal is, of course, to increase the cooperation among vehicles, roadside systems and traffic control centers, for greater road safety. However, social and cloud applications for drivers and passengers alike are envisioned to be more and more tightly integrated with the vehicle on-board systems, as well as with the mobile devices carried by passengers. Following the spirit of the WONS conference, the Special Session on VANETs and ITS will cover all research topics related to vehicular networking technologies, applications, systems and services, and, in particular:
- Medium access control protocols
- Multi-channel organization and operation
- Communication protocol design and network management
- System architecture
- Safety and comfort applications
- Cooperative Awareness applications
- V2X communication
- Simulation frameworks and field operational testing
- Security and privacy
- Social and cloud applications for vehicles
- Wireless in-car networks
- DSRC systems for vulnerable road users (pedestrians, road workers, bicycles, etc.)
- Automated driving and communication

COMMUNITY WIRELESS NETWORKS
Internet access is crucial. However, more than 5 billion people are without Internet access. This disparity is greater and has higher negative impact in rural areas and in developing regions where it is not cost effective for network operators to deploy technical infrastructure to support the needs of such communities. This has led to new community driven access initiatives mainly in the form of wireless networks that are community built and managed. This has led to a spate of innovations in technology such as architecting new longer range wireless infrastructures, energy-efficient infrastructures, mesh networking, crowdshared networks etc, but also to the rise of new socio-economic models.
The special session on Community Wireless Networks will be held in conjunction with the 11th Annual Conference on Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services (WONS) in Obergurgl, Austria on April 2-4, 2014. The purpose of the special session is to bring together researchers focussing on the design, development, deployment and management of community wireless networks to share their deployment experiences, state-of-the art research ideas and results, open issues and new trends. We specifically encourage contributions from socio-economic studies providing an insight into sustainable community led initiatives.
